Were you paid to post rental listings or verify your identity?

If someone offered you money to verify your identity or post listings, here's what's going on and what to do next.

Some scammers recruit people online, often through neighborhood apps, job boards, and social media, with offers like "get paid to post rental listings" or "earn money to verify an account." These jobs aren't real.

How the scam works

  1. Someone offers to pay you to create a RentSpree account and verify your identity.
  2. They take over the account and post listings for homes they don't own or have permission to rent.
  3. Renters who reach out are asked to send a deposit through Venmo, Zelle, or another payment app. The home was never available, and the renter loses their money.

Because the account was verified with your identity, the listings and any renter reports are connected to your name.

Signs it's a scam

  • You're paid to verify your identity, or asked to share a verification code.
  • You're asked to hand over your login, or someone else uses the account you created.
  • You're asked to post homes you've never seen and don't own or manage.
  • You're paid through a payment app or gift card by someone you've never met.

If this happened to you

  1. Stop. Don't post listings, verify again, or share any codes.
  2. Contact us. Submit a ticket with the email on the account and any contact details you have for the person who hired you. We'll take the listings down so renters aren't affected.
  3. Secure your accounts. Change the password on any account you shared and turn on two-step verification for your email.

Landlords and agents on RentSpree verify their own identity and only list homes they own or manage. A real job will never ask you to verify for someone else.
